A Day of Art and History in Paris

Paris is one of our favorite cities -it’s rich in art, history, culture, and excellent food and wine. While some locations worth visiting are quite well know, like the Louvre or the Palace of Versailles, we’ve put together a list of lesser-known destinations you can easily incorporate into your visit.

Stay

For accommodations, we have three recommendations. For those who prefer classic luxury, you can’t go wrong with Four Seasons Hotel George V – it’s the best in Parisian elegance. Set in the heart of Paris, it’s walking distance to high end shopping, as well as the Eiffel Tower and L’Arc de Triomphe. The hotel boasts two Michelin starred restaurants, excellent in-room dining, gorgeous sun-filled suites, and concierge that truly goes above and beyond (give them some details about your trip over the phone when booking and you won’t be disappointed with the little touches that await you upon arrival). However, if you prefer boutique hotels, consider Hôtel Caron de Beaumarchais Paris in the historic Marais district. Step back in time into a charming 18th century 19-room inn; music lovers will appreciate the 1792 piano-forte and a Louis XV harp in the common areas, as well as a card-table and fireplace. The rooms are cozy and well appointed; expect exposed wood beams, balconies in many rooms, and lush furnishings. Another excellent boutique hotel is The Hotel d'Angleterre in Saint Germain des Prés; lovely rooms with four poster beds, stone walls, and fireplaces are complemented by the cozy garden, welcoming guests for breakfast and tea or wine and charcuterie. Whichever hotel you choose, take advantage of the breakfast offerings –it’s best to start the day off with warm croissants and other delicious treats.

Food

Walk over to 51 and 52 Rue Montmorency for a dose of history; the building dates back to 1407. The space now serves as an excellent restaurant, Auberge Nicolas Flamel, open for lunch and dinner. Allow a couple of hours to explore the area on foot – and you’ll be right by the Centre Pompidou should that be on your list. For dinner after your visit to the Marais (or for lunch on a Saturday), stop by Robert et Louise. The classic French bistro opened in 1958 and offers an exceptional menu of classics, such as lamb chops, duck confit, and ribeye steaks, served in a cozy atmosphere around a warm fire.

Art

Many Monet fans visit Musée d’Orsay or perhaps Musée de l’Orangerie to view his paintings (and both are well worth the visit), but the Musée Marmottan Monet remains lesser known for some reason, even though this 19th-century mansion houses the largest collection of Monet works, including early works. In good weather, this museum in the 16th arrondissement is easily walkable from the Trocadéro Gardens or Eiffel Tower.

We suggest spending the afternoon in the Marais exploring contemporary art galleries – note that most open at 11am and close Sundays and Mondays, as well as for 1-2 weeks around Christmas. Be sure to check the website if there is a specific gallery you’re hoping to visit. We love Marian Goodman Gallery, which shows artists such as William Kentridge and Gerard Richter, as well as the female owned and run Galerie Papillon.

Family Fun

For a truly unforgettable weekend (or long day trip – it’s about 4 hours each way), we highly recommend making the journey to Mont Saint-Michel. The island’s history dates back to 708 with most of it built between the 11th and 16th centuries. The town is rich in history and is truly unlike anywhere else. Home to less than 50 year-round residents, this unusual destination is filled with intrigue for adults and children alike.
