Lifestyle Comparison: Luxury Homes and Different Locations

British American Household Staffing works to staff luxury residences all over the world. Each city and state tend to attract different types of families or individuals with specific lifestyle requirements. While no home is the same, we see many commonalities based on the size of the property and where it is located.

Properties

Estates

Estates are large residences that require a body of domestic staff in order to keep the property in order and the family’s lifestyle managed. A 25,000 square foot estate may have a setup similar to:

  • Estate Manager
  • House Manager, Personal Assistant or Butler/House Manager
  • 4-5 Housekeepers
  • 2 Chefs
  • Nannies (if there are children)
  • Landscapers
  • Grounds-men
  • Domestic Couple (sometimes)
  • Chauffeur (sometimes)
  • Private Jet/Yacht Chef and Stewardess (sometimes)
  • Security x 2 (sometimes)

Remote, Second or Third Properties

Depending on how often the principals use the property, remote properties are usually staffed with a domestic couple who live on the grounds and take care of the home year-round. Smaller properties may be managed by a housekeeper year-round. Often the principals will bring their domestic staff with them when in residence.

Locations

New York and Connecticut

The majority of our East Coast clients are older, inherited wealth, or wealth creators. Household staff are much more common and expected.

Many ultra high net worth (UHNW) and high net worth (HNW) principals will use the above estate structure. These households are further divided into those who live large and enjoy the appearance of luxury living, which we call “formal homes,” and those who choose to live in luxury apartments and generally avoid the appearance of large, luxury living. Each structure operates best with the right household staff in place.

Butler/house manager hires are a very popular hire for “formal” estate owners, as a butler has a background in luxury hospitality and service and is able to maintain the appearance of formal living. A butler will manage the principal’s wardrobe, oversee the housekeeping staff, and ensure every detail is up to standard, down to flower arranging and napkin folding. The house manager will manage the home through a household manual and create weekly schedules and deal with any last minute changes.

Estate/House Management includes:

  • Personal Assistant
  • Housekeeping (2+)
  • Team of Nannies (2+)
  • Chef
  • Chauffeur

Los Angeles, California

Most UHNW and HNW principals live large in Los Angeles as it is a city that encourages outward appearances. Properties are usually vast and lifestyles are more public than NY, CT, SF, or London.

Estate/House Management includes:

  • Estate Manager
  • Chef
  • Butler
  • Personal Assistant
  • Housekeeping Staff (3+)
  • Nanny

San Francisco, California

The large majority of our San Francisco clients are wealth creators, and many have come into that wealth fairly recently. They live understated, subtle lives on very large properties.

To keep a large property going staff is needed, but SF families do not want to live a “formal” life. Most are very happy to pay market rate for a high-quality hire, which ensures each employee is fairly compensated and ready to stay long-term in their position.

Estate/House Management includes:

  • Housekeeping Staff (1-3)
  • Team of Nannies (2-4, depending on the number of children)
  • Personal Chef
  • Personal Assistant or Estate Manager

The areas we staff most in San Francisco are the Peninsula, Marin, and the city. Almost all families or individuals we work with in the Bay Area are private, want their space and privacy maintained.

The most popular hire in SF is either an estate manager or personal assistant as these professionals help manage all administrative and management areas of personal life, freeing up time for the principals or families.

Palm Beach, Florida

Our Palm Beach clients tend to be formal, older wealth with an appreciation for high-level hospitality. Household staff usually includes few nannies or childcare roles as the client base is more mature. Staff may be more difficult to find in Palm Beach due to commute and location.

 Estate/House Management includes:

  • Butler
  • Housekeeping Staff (1-3)
  • Chauffeur
  • Estate Managers

Miami, Florida

Unlike Palm Beach, Miami homes are not typically formal and employ less staff. Our clients include celebrities, large homes, vacation homes, and families with visible luxury. Staff rates tend to be low in Miami because of the large amount of competition for those positions.

 Estate/House Management includes:

  • Butlers
  • Chefs
  • Housekeepers

London

The London UHNW and HNW landscape is the most culturally diverse due to its proximity to the Middle East, Switzerland, France, and Russia. The types of residences and individuals we serve vary enormously in needs, privacy, and property size. Clients are often inherited British wealth.

Often families pay under market but are more committed to keeping staff long-term. They live formally but more sparsely than a Saudi or Russian home. Staff work structured schedules and are provided on-property housing; two benefits that motivate staff to work long-term for one family.

Estate/House Management includes:

  • Estate Manager or House Manager
  • Domestic Couple for remote properties
  • Housekeeping Staff (4-6)
  • Team of Nannies (2+)
  • Housekeeper/cook or Chef
  • Butler or Lady’s Maid

London based British families live a little more simply than their New York counterparts in large family homes and apartments. Staff for these households may include a cook or housekeeper/cook, a full-time nanny, and a personal assistant.

Middle Eastern Wealth

More often-than-not, wealthy families from the ME who buy property and residency in London live very large and private lives. Their homes are vast, and they often buy a large number of investment properties.

Often staff in these homes work 60-100 hours a week, and are generously compensated. The intense travel and schedule can result in staff turn around of one to two years. Female staff of every level are a popular hire for ME wealth.

 Estate/House Management includes:

  • Estate Manager
  • House Manager
  • Personal Assistant
  • Team of Nannies (5+)
  • Security Staff (5-8)
  • Housekeeping Staff (10+)
  • Multiple Chefs
  • Butlers (usually 2-4)
  • Lady’s maids
  • Yacht crew

Russian Wealth

Russian wealth often live in large residences in London and will own several investment properties in addition to their main home. They usually hire Russian or British career staff. Staff that are fluent in Russian are preferred for most families.

Heavy travel and long hours are typical for staff working in a Russian home. British governesses are a popular childcare hire for families as they can provide education and language development as well as general care.

Estate/House Management includes:

  • Estate Manager
  • House Manager
  • Personal Assistant
  • Team of Nannies (5+)
  • Security Staff (4)
  • Housekeeping Staff (10+)
  • Multiple Chefs
  • Domestic couples for remote properties
  • Butler
  • Yacht crew
