Private Household Chefs

A private chef will often hold a degree from a reputable culinary school and will typically have a minimum of three years’ experience in a domestic setting, in addition to restaurant experience. Their overall set of responsibilities includes maintaining the kitchen, planning menus based on preferences and dietary restrictions, and preparing meals for the individual or family. Full-time or part-time personal chefs will work a variety of schedules, depending on the needs of the family. Schedules can range from daily dinner preparation, to a full schedule of breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They will also be essential in planning any events in the home and will have a solid understanding of the various styles of table service.

Though most private chefs have experience in and an understanding of various cuisines and dietary restrictions, some do specialize in specific areas such as vegan, vegetarian, low salt, low fat, gluten, and dairy free cooking, or in specific cuisines such as French, Indian, Italian, and more. Private chefs for families are accustomed to different types of service, including family style service, food that is prepared in advance to be reheated, and formal plating, and are able to adapt to family’s changing needs.

In some instances, a chef will be expected to join the family as a live-in employee during the summer, should the family have a summer residence in the Hamptons or elsewhere.  Summer work usually implies a heavier schedule covering the weekends and would usually involve preparing for large dinner parties. Some chefs are also willing to live-in with a family full-time and travel with them to various residences as needed.

What are the duties of Personal Chefs?

A personal chef will generally take full responsibility for the kitchen, including stocking the pantry and fridge with staple items, preparing and storing favorite snacks, and maintaining the organization of the kitchen area. Often, the private chef is also responsible for grocery shopping, both for pantry items, as well as the ingredients needed for meal preparation. Full-time chefs are commonly paid an annual salary with benefits and are generally provided with a family credit card with which to purchase grocery items.

A full-time or part-time private chef’s specific duties may include:

  • Keeping informed of all food and sanitation rules
  • Menu planning based on dietary needs and preferences
  • Keeping kitchens clean and organized
  • Managing other household staff involved in food prep and serving
  • Stocking pantries and refrigerator
  • Preparing meals to be reheated by the family later
  • Planning and preparing any and all food and drink for events/gatherings in the home
  • Preparing healthy snacks that are easily accessible to the family between mealtimes.

Testimonials

“This is a wonderful agency!!I have a seven-year-old daughter and the team at BAHS has helped me with different nannies for the different stages of her development and, tutors and occasional staffing needs. Once you are part of the BAHS family they will truly work with you to support your family and get you the best possible staff – and always make you feel understood and with respect for your privacy.”

-SR, Client

“I recently utilized this agency to help me find a nanny for my six year old son.  I can’t say enough good things about the quality of the service at BAHS.  They really listened to my needs, and only sent me candidates who met my criteria and who were really interested in working with my family.  The agency’s responsiveness, attention to detail and ability to be discrete was top notch.  While I hope our current nanny stays with us as long as we need, I would use this agency again if I ever have additional staffing needs.”

-CA, Client

“I cannot recommend this agency enough. I am a British Nanny with twenty seven years of experience so I have encountered many agencies both here and London during my working life. It did take time for me to find the right position as I am choosy, but each time I decided a job wasn’t right for me they didn’t criticize my reasoning but just persevered in finding what would eventually be the perfect fit for me.”
