Our Guide To Stay In Los Angeles with Little Ones

When you think of children in Los Angeles, you might picture a day at Disneyland or the Hollywood Walk of Fame but there’s plenty to do outside of the main tourist attractions.

Spend Time Outside

Many people love Huntington Gardens but less will tell you about the lush Descanso Gardens, a magical escape with stunning year-round blooms. Inside the garden, expect a huge array of plants and flowers, as well as fruit trees, streams, ponds, and open lawns. During the holiday season, don’t miss their Enchanted Forest of Light, a whimsical evening light show perfect for adults and children. Another lovely urban escape is a family hike through Will Rogers Park – at the base of the hiking trails, you’ll find a huge, beautiful open lawn perfect for picnicking. Be sure to check their calendar for the schedule of movie nights, polo games, horseback riding lessons, and other special events.

Eat Well

For a casual but excellent lunch the whole family will enjoy, stop by Broad Street Oyster Co. in Malibu to eat in or take out to the nearby beach. The menu features fresh oysters, caviar, sea urchin, ceviche, and more for the adults (and adventurous youngsters!), and simple meals like burgers and fish and chips for children. Pair with a local beer or natural wine from their extensive selection. Afterwards, head over to the Cross Creek Playground – this sensory-rich playground has tons of activities for children of all ages and abilities.

While you’re in town, we recommend stopping for treats at Sidecar Donuts – we haven’t found a fresher or better tasting donut in any city. The menu changes seasonally so be check to see if the current flavors appeal to you – if not, you can’t go wrong with their Huckleberry or Vanilla Bean Glazed from their year-round classic menu.

Entertainment

Check the schedule at the New Beverly Cinema to see if you’ll be able to catch a “Kiddee Matinée”; the historic theatre, owned since 2007 by Quentin Tarantino, does frequent kid-friendly afternoon screenings of new and old films, including Elf, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Bugs Bunny. Tickets include a free bag of popcorn for patrons ages 12 and under.

We also adore visiting Griffith Park – children will love riding the southern railroad through an old western town, exploring the free Travel Town Museum to learn about trains, riding the carousel, taking a turn on the pony rides, and learning about plants and animals at the 133-acre zoo. During the holiday season, don’t miss Irvine Park Railroad’s Annual Christmas Train. Hop aboard at the train station, ride through the historic Irvine Regional Park all the way to the North Pole to meet Santa Claus; afterwards, ride the train back to the station through a magical holiday tunnel of lights.
