Quiet European Estate

Quiet European Escapes

Sometimes we all need a break from the hustle and bustle of the big city. This week, we’ve gathered our favorite European getaways to enjoy slow days, relaxed meals, long naps, and meandering walks, whether you’re seeking a retreat into nature, a Medieval town, or a relaxed winery weekend in the countryside.

Amiens, France

Just a little over two hours from Paris, Amiens is a lovely town to enjoy history, excellent food, and long walks along the River Somme. For a truly charming afternoon, visit the The Hortillonnages, a series of floating gardens and markets accessible only by boat. Take the train up during the summer or in December to see the Amiens Cathedral (dating back to 1220–1270) lit up in color to replicate the original paint that would’ve adorned the facade. It’s spectacular and an absolute must for anyone interested in Gothic architecture (and it’s worth noting that this cathedral is the largest Gothic cathedral in France). Book the Sauna Suite at the Hotel Marotte to lounge in a spacious 2-bedroom suite, complete with a large stone tub and sauna for four. While in town, be sure to try both Ficelle Picarde and the region’s macarons, both specialties the area is known for!

Tuscany, Italy

In the heart of Tuscany’s wild Maremma countryside, book a room at Castello Di Vicarello to enjoy seclusion, stunning countryside views, and the best in luxury amenities. While all of the suites at this historic hotel are special in their own way, we adore the Suite Villa Chiesina – the cliffside 1615 square foot villa boats traditional Tuscan design, 2 floors, a pergola with outdoor seating, a wine cellar, and is just steps away from the property’s infinity pool. During your stay, ask the hotel concierge to arrange wine tastings, cooking classes, hiking and biking trips, truffle hunting, horseback riding, and more.

Lapland, Finland

You might have to book this destination quite far in advance – there is often a waiting list – but it will be well worth the wait. Octola is five-star luxury accommodation in the heart of the Finnish wild. This year-round resort offers different experiences each season – from nature and foraging walks to snowshoeing and sledding, the property has a huge array of activities to choose from no matter the weather. Leave your phone at home and escape into a truly unique getaway.

Monroyo, Spain

About three hours outside Barcelona in a bucolic area of Spain, you will find Torre del Marqués Hotel Spa & Winery. The 18-room luxury boutique hotel is set inside a beautifully restored 18th-century tower and has the perfect balance of historic touches and modern amenities. Panoramic glass windows in the restaurant look out onto seemingly endless greenery of the Spanish countryside. The spa has a sauna, a Turkish bath, and treatment rooms, as well as a heated outdoor swimming pool. While you’re there, take part in olive oil tasting, truffle hunting, horse-riding or just enjoy some quiet time outside stargazing.
